LOCAL ANDOVER BASED MEDICAL COMPENSATION CLAIM SPECIALISTS
If you live in Andover, you’re lucky to have access to a number of NHS units. But if you or a loved one suffered medical negligence in Andover or the surrounding area, it will almost always involve services run by Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (HHFT). HHFT operates Andover War Memorial Hospital (AWMH) as well as the acute hospitals in Winchester (Royal Hampshire County Hospital) and Basingstoke (Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital). AWMH provides day surgery, diagnostics, inpatient rehabilitation, an outpatient unit, a nurse-led Minor Injuries Unit and a midwife-led Birth Centre on site, together with the Countess of Brecknock Hospice.
Here at Andover Law Firm Bonallack and Bishop, we recognise that at the heart of every medical negligence claim is a real person whose trust in the medical profession might have been completely undermined by the incompetence or negligence of a health care professional. We understand that the resulting trauma goes far deeper than the physical discomfort and pain caused by the medical error and that getting an acknowledgement of that mistake in the form of medical negligence compensation can be part of the healing process.
[NB medical negligence is often called clinical negligence – don’t worry, they both mean exactly the same thing].

THE NEED FOR SPECIALIST LEGAL ADVICE
Claiming compensation after a medical accident is often complex. Not only is the law and procedure surrounding any medical claim complicated, but your solicitor is going to need a good understanding of the medical concepts involved – when reviewing your x-rays, reading expert medical reports and trying to decipher any hospital or GP notes. That’s why you need a genuine specialist.
NHS league tables September 2025 update – Andover War Memorial Hospital gets a very poor rating
If you live in Andover, most hospital treatment is provided by Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Andover War Memorial Hospital as well as hospitals in both Winchester and Basingstoke.
In the September 2025 NHS league tables, Hampshire Hospitals ranked 101st out of 134 acute trusts, a really poor result. It only just avoided being placed in category 4 – the official list of the worst performing hospitals in the country.
The Care Quality Commission has also judged parts of the trust’s care—especially urgent and emergency services—as “requires improvement”, raising concerns about staffing and patient flow.
For local Andover patients, this means standards are uneven, and there is a clear risk of poor outcomes in pressured areas. If you or a family member have suffered harm after treatment at Andover or another Hampshire Hospitals site, it is important to seek legal advice to see if you may have a valid claim for compensation.

THE HAMPSHIRE HOSPITALS TRUST AND MEDICAL NEGLIGENCE
Good news for local people – Following its last full inspection in January–February 2020, the Andover War Memorial Hospital is currently rated as “Good overall” by the Care Quality Commission (the CQC is the independent regulator of health and social care in England).
Service-level ratings in the report include “Good” for surgery and urgent & emergency services, Outstanding” for end-of-life care, and “Good” for maternity & gynaecology
And this is definitely good news for the Andover population – because it followed an earlier BBC report that, Hampshire Hospitals Trust has developed what appears to be a poor record of medical errors in the preceding years. In the five year period up to 2018, the trust had to pay out compensation and legal costs of a remarkable £39 million as a result of medical negligence. That placed it as the 68th worst trust nationwide, out of a total of 260 health trusts.
NEVER EVENTS – A WORRYING RECENT RECORD AT ANDOVER WAR MEMORIAL HOSPITAL IN 2025
“Never Events” are national patient-safety red flags. The wording is simple – these are our events that should simply never happen. They cover the most serious and entirely preventable patient safety incidents. And remarkably, according to NHS England, in 2023/24, HHFT reported 4 Never Events.
Again, according to NHS England, 2024/25 provisionally, HHFT is already listed with 6 Never Events. These figures may be adjusted after investigations conclude but give a current signal of risk themes the Trust is working on..
