Breast cancer screening recall at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital

Doctors at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital in Dorset have recalled 272 women for reassessment following Consultants at the hospital becoming concerned about assessments carried out by a doctor who no longer works for the Trust and the lack of follow up of the ladies concerned.

Between January 2011 and July 2012 these women were assessed by a doctor who no longer works at the hospital. They were told that they needed no further follow up.

These women have been recalled for a further assessment to ensure that they did not have breast cancer.

Solicitor, Denise Broomfield from Bonallack and Bishop commends the Bournemouth hospital for taking this follow up action. “It is good to see the Consultants being open about the problem and recalling the women concerned” she says. “In years gone by such an open attitude would not have been taken and patients would have been put at further risk”.

Denise, who has acted for a number of women who have had their diagnosis of breast cancer delayed, over her 20 years of practice continues to say:

“My experience in dealing with women who have had their diagnosis of breast cancer delayed is that it can have an adverse affect on their health and life expectancy. As a very general rule a delay of 6 months does usually not have a long term effect but a delay beyond that period can. I have worked with a number of doctors in the past who have confirmed this view. Of course, everyone hopes that the women concerned all have clear results and that there is no harm done.”

It is noted that the doctor who performed the initial examinations has been referred to the General Medical Council which is the body which regulates doctors and protects patient safety.

Hundreds recalled to Royal Bournemouth Hospital breast cancer clinic

Nearly 300 women who were screened for breast cancer at The Royal Bournemouth Hospital in Dorset have been told that the junior doctor who screened them may have given them the all-clear incorrectly. They have, therefore, been asked to have follow-up screenings done at the hospital.

272 patients who were seen between early 2011 and July 2012 have been sent letters explaining why it is so important to be re-checked.

The junior doctor involved is a male who has not been named and it is thought that he failed to carry out the necessary procedures when assessing patients. The consultants in charge of the clinic raised concerns after observing the way in which the doctor screened patients.

Complaints about the doctor, who has now moved elsewhere, continued until July 2012. the General Medical Council is now investigating the individual and has invited the Royal College of Surgeons to assist with matters.

A spokesman for Royal Bournemouth Hospital has admitted that it appears as though a junior doctor performed below the level expected of hospital staff. However, evidence is yet to be found that serious errors were made.

A hotline has been set up in order to provide support to the women affected and extra clinics will be on offer in order to make sure that those requiring follow-up tests will not need to wait to be seen.
