Abdominoplasty is a complicated medical procedure which can go wrong, just as any other type of medical procedure can. It is common referred to as a ‘tummy tuck’, and it’s the process during which excess skin and fat is removed from around the abdomen, leaving the patient with a flatter stomach than they had previously. This can be due to cosmetic reasons or, as is often the case, because a large amount of weight loss has resulted in excess skin being left around the waist area.
The abdominoplasty procedure usually only lasts around two hours or so, but a hospital stay of a few days is quite normal following the operation so that your condition can be gauged by the hospital staff before you are released, as is normal with any major surgery.
Failed abdominoplasty – the risks
As with any form of surgery, there are risks attached to an abdominoplasty, not least the possibility of infections, scarring, blood clots or even more serious issues such as nerve damage caused by the surgeon’s incisions. In cases where things go wrong, you can often be left feeling upset and even violated and may want to seek some form of justice or to claim compensation.
Abdominoplasty and proving negligence
It is worth noting at this stage that any form of medical negligence must be proven — it is not simply enough for your operation to have gone wrong or had some undesirable outcomes, but instead you must be able to prove that the undesirable outcome was the direct result of negligent treatment on the part of a surgeon or doctor involved in your medical procedure. If this is the case, you could be due a sizeable amount of financial compensation for your trauma or physical injuries resulting from your failed abdominoplasty.
