Claiming compensation for the contraction of C Difficile

The statistics for the number of people contracting superbugs in Britain’s hospitals are truly alarming and one of the nastiest bugs around is Clostridium Difficile, or C Difficile as it is usually known. If you or a family member has contracted the bug in one of the nation’s hospitals there is a good chance that you will be eligible to claim medical negligence compensation.

Explaining C-Difficile

C Difficile is a fairly new bug to Britain’s hospitals known to cause diarrhoea to patients. It is a bacterium which the body naturally produces in the digestive system and is particularly common in babies. The bacterium will multiply when there are changes in the bacteria levels in the body, which is often likely to happen after taking a course of antibiotics. Given the number of patients in hospitals who have been on a course of antibiotics, as well as the number of elderly patients who are more prone to contracting the bug, it is unsurprising that C Difficile has spread through Britain’s wards.

The bug can seem innocuous with sufferers only having mild diarrhoea which passes fairly quickly. However, in some cases it can be extremely dangerous and even life threatening due to the dehydration it can cause. The bug is extremely resilient, capable of living outside the body for over two months and thriving on unclean areas like floors and bathroom facilities. It can even survive cleaning products and can therefore easily spread throughout hospitals as patients are moved to different wards due to the lack of available beds.

Claiming Compensation

If you or a member of your family has suffered from C Difficile, you may be entitled to claim compensation. The hospital should ensure that wards are clean using steam cleaning if possible, that medical staff wear disposable gloves and aprons which are discarded after dealing with individual patients and that those patients who exhibit signs of C Difficile are separated from other patients. If these steps are not taken, there will be a case for a medical negligence claim.
